About Us
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)
IRS Certified Volunteers provide FREE income tax preparation for low to moderate income individuals, individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited English language ability. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) defines income levels.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) was founded in 1971 by Gary Iskowitz at the California State University in Northridge. Since the 1970's the program has grown to several thousand sites nationwide, partnering with non-profit organizations, local municipalities, and colleges and universities. The VITA Program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service
HRA's VITA Program (HRA VITA)
The Human Resources Agency of New Britain, Inc. (HRA) launched the VITA Program in New Britain in 2004 as an outgrowth of the New Britain Asset Building Coalition (NBABC). The NBABC's goal is to increase the awareness of and use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

Under HRA's leadership, the VITA program has grown each year. Since 2004, staff and volunteers have prepared a total of 76,822 Federal Income Tax Returns. These income tax returns have helped reinvest $124,096,808 in Federal Refunds alone to the Greater Bristol, Meriden, New Britain, and Wallingford communities. The HRA VITA Program is part of HRA's Foundations for Financial Independence Program (FFI).

2023 was a banner year - VITA volunteers and staff prepared tax returns for 8,510 taxpayers. These refunds returned over $11,043,401 to the greater Bristol, Meriden, New Britain, and Wallingford communities.

VITA income tax assistance also saves low to moderate income individuals money. The average fee for tax preparation is about $173. In 2023, VITA helped save taxpayers over $1,463,720.

HRA's VITA Program is unique in the State of Connecticut

-
HRA's North Oak Community Center is the largest VITA site in the State of Connecticut preparing over 2,800 tax returns annually.
-
HRA's VITA Youth Program is the only one of its kind in the state - recruiting and certifying over 40 young adults each year across our service area.

Our Volunteers and Funders
HRA does not accomplish this on its own. It is grateful to the 160+ volunteers who work hard to make the program grow. It also thanks its funders; the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, the United Way of West Central Connecticut, the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford, the American Savings Foundation, the Main Street Community Foundation, and the Internal Revenue Service.
